Hello! Hi! Bok! Hola! Ciao! What’s up?! 👋 . . This here is me in Imotski. Beautiful. Lovely. Stunning. Unforgettable Imotski. 💙 . During our 48-day road trip across Croatia last spring/summer, David and I took a day trip to Imotski from Podgora (equally beautiful, lovely, stunning, and unforgettable). 🚘 . . We had many activity options to choose from during our stay in Podgora--a boar tour to Brač island, a hike through Biokovo Mountain Nature Park, or a visit to Makarska, among other possibilities. ⛵️⛰ . But Imotski was on my list before there was an official road trip itinerary. . . Why? . . Because I had never visited the area before, and was so intrigued by what I heard and saw through photos about the Blue and Red Lakes. . . I knew we had to make Imotski a priority, and I’m so glad we did. . Imotski, nestled on a hill in the Dalmatian Zagora region, is filled with warm, friendly people and make-you-never-wanna-leave natural surroundings, such as the Blue Lake you see here. 💙 . The Blue Lake (or Modro jezero in Croatian) has its home in a sinkhole that is thought to have been formed from a sunken-in cave. A karst water body, the Blue Lake is about 288 meters (944 feet) deep from the basin’s topmost rim to its bottom--crazy! 😮 . . Beyond its unique appearance and formation, the Blue Lake’s water level ebbs and flows with the seasons and weather conditions. 💧 . . When it’s full, you can enjoy a nice, cool swim, and when it’s empty you may have the chance to catch a lively soccer/football match on the lake floor! 🏊‍♀️ ⚽️ . . And so, if you’re planning your trip to Croatia, I highly recommend you add Imotski to your list ASAP. 🇭🇷 . . . #newfavoriteplace #bluelake #imotski #modrojezero #croatiatravel #croatia #hrvatska #croatialove #croatiachronicles #croatiaroadtrip #timeoutcroatia #putopis #croatiaweek #croatiafulloflife #chasingthedonkey #croatiapostcards #comeandfallinlovewithcroatia #cro_explore #croatiaaddict #touristsofcroatia #croatia_photography #vacationmemories #travelmemories
Another year ends tonight (or may already be over for some of you across the world from me here in the U.S!). 🎉 . I’m very grateful to have had the support of both friends and family as David and I embarked on an ambitious 48-day road trip across Croatia this past spring/summer. And I’m grateful for getting the chance to connect to many new friends thanks to Instagram--both virtually and in-person! 😃 . Thank you for following along and for your unwavering support. I really appreciate it. ❤️ . 2018 was a year of big learning for me--learning for my graduate program 📚, learning at my jobs (yes, plural 😓), and learning more about myself and others 👩‍💻. It was also another year of insane busyness--long, crazy hours with not enough time to recharge (something I’m hoping to rectify in 2019). . Speaking of 2019, the New Year will be bringing a lot of changes to my life--some of which I’ll share as the New Year unfolds. ✏️ . One big change I’ll share right now is that I will be graduating with my Master in Public Administration in the spring, and I can’t wait! 🎊 It’s been a long 3 years of so, so much work and countless personal ups & downs. I’m looking forward to closing this chapter of my life and opening the next. 😊 . To all of you: I wish you a 2019 that delivers exactly what you need--even if you might not know what that is just yet. 🌟 . Happy New Year! Sretna Nova Godina! 🥳 . And thank you once again for your support. 💙 . . . #newyearseve #readyfor2019 #ilok #ilockipodrumi #winetasting #slavonia #croatia #hrvatska #croatiatravel #croatiachronicles #timeoutcroatia #putopis #croatiaweek #croatiafulloflife #chasingthedonkey #croatiapostcards #comeandfallinlovewithcroatia #cro_explore #croatiaaddict #touristsofcroatia #croatia_photography
“I’m thinking about people and trees and how I wish I could be silent more, be more tree than anything else, less clumsy and loud, less crow, more cool white pine, and how it’s hard not to always want something else, not just to let the savage grass grow.” -Ada Limón . Hello, hello! 👋 . . How’s it going??? (Yes, I do really want to know when I ask! So feel free to reply below! 👇) . It’s nice to say “hi” after some time off from posting, nice to check-in with a simple “hey” and a poetry quote and a nature photo. . . So that’s exactly what I’m doing. And that’s all. For now. 😊 . Ciao, ciao! 👋 . . P.S. This simple little photo was taken in Imotski this spring as David & I explored the Blue Lake area on our 48-day road trip across Croatia!! 🇭🇷 Highly recommend it!! 😍💚 . #longtimenopost #backonthegramkinda #croatia #hrvatska #imotski #greenvibes #apath #croatiatravel #croatia_ig #croatiapostcards #croatiafulloflife #croatiafullofnature
I’ve been doing lots of thinking and brainstorming and doodling recently, and I have some questions for you! I’d love to hear your thoughts! 💭 . . Feel free to answer one of these questions, all of the questions, or say something totally different! 💌 . I’ve gotten to know many of you (who I don’t know already) through online conversations (and even in person!) and I’ve learned that you all have a deep love and appetite for travel, for life. ✈️ 🌍 . . So that’s why I’d really love to hear from you today (or whenever you see this post!). Leave a comment below, or send me a DM—whatever floats your boat! 🚣 . . THE QUESTIONS (interpret them however you’d like!): . (1) If there were no barriers (money, time, ability, etc.), what would you do? . (2) Favorite book of all time (or in recent memory)? . (3) What does travel mean to you? . (4) What do you love and hate about Instagram? . (5) What is one thing you would change about the country you call home? . . . #podgora #croatiatravel #croatia #hrvatska #croatialove #croatiachronicles #croatiaroadtrip #timeoutcroatia #putopis #croatiaweek #croatiafulloflife #chasingthedonkey #croatiapostcards #comeandfallinlovewithcroatia #cro_explore #croatiaaddict #touristsofcroatia #travelthoughts #travelmusings #adriaticsea #seasideview #biokovo #randomthoughts #questionsoflife
WHAT?!?! I’m posting on Instagram after almost 3 whole weeks away? What is thissss? 😂 . So yes, it’s been some time (if you’ve noticed, or maybe you haven’t, either way whatever, eh? 😂), but I’m not apologizing for it, nor do I feel I need to explain why or feel bad for not sharing the #croatialove because I don’t think anyone needs to apologize for living their life offline. . I share these thoughts because I think a lot of folks feel the need to account for their lost time online and it’s like---woah, chill because (1) you’re probably not as important as you think you are (ouch--that stings a little, right? 😘), (2) go live your damn life without feeling sorry about it, and (3) go live your damn life however you damn well please. 😎 . ANYWAYSSS, what I will say is that I’ve been working on some exciting things (and also less exciting things, you know, like graduate exams and such because I’m working toward my Master’s degree.👩‍🎓). . Maybe I’ll share more about that some time, maybe I won’t. 🤷‍♀️ Ne znam! 😉 . . But enough of me and my opinions -- HOW ARE YOU? Looking forward to the weekend? Got any fun plans? ⁉️ . Oh. Yea. This picture. It’s a pretty one, eh? Blue on blue on blue. I took this photo in Podgora during our 48-day road trip across Croatia this past spring/summer. 🇭🇷 . . When I look at this photo, it puts me at ease. The expansive blue and the ripples of water come alive before me as if I am there right now. (And I sure as hell wish I was there right now… 😍) . I took this photo in the late morning. It was our last day in Podgora (our new favorite place in Croatia, BTW) and we were having a breakfast of burek from the local bakery and cocktails at Riva Cocktail Bar. . . The waves crinkled over the pebbled beach, the sea lightly slapped the sides of the cement platform with a swish and swash--light, light like a cat softly kneading a blanket to the thrumming hum of purrs. 🌊 . . Delight and bliss all wrapped into one--that’s how I’d describe this photo and the moment behind it. It was our last day in Podgora and we didn’t want to leave. But I know we’ll be back. 💙
Here is David (my husband) with a cute little dog who came to join us on a beach in Podgora during a relaxing afternoon this past May. 🐶 . . The dog trotted up to us after we had finished a (cold) swim in the sea. S/he was so friendly and was looking for some playmates. We happily obliged by throwing some sticks we found (although the little cutie DID NOT bring back any sticks so we were pretty much his/her stick vending machines 😂). . After some time, the little fellow trotted away and out of sight only to come back about 10 minutes later, ready for more attention. We have no idea whose s/he was, but we presumed s/he went in and out of an apartment directly behind us. 🏠 . . The dog’s sudden appearance on the beach was a random and welcome moment during our wonderful visit to Podgora. To me, the best travels are made up of these unexpected moments of warmth and delight. 💙 . If you’d like to read more about our Croatia road trip experiences, click the link in my bio for a recap (in 60 words or less!) of memorable moments from our trip! 😃 . . . #dogstagram #beachdog #dogsofcroatia #vacationmemory #seasidevisitor #seadog #podgora #croatiatravel #croatia #hrvatska #croatialove #croatiachronicles #roadtrip #croatiaroadtrip #timeoutcroatia #putopis #croatiaweek #croatiafulloflife #chasingthedonkey #croatiapostcards #comeandfallinlovewithcroatia #cro_explore #croatiaaddict #touristsofcroatia
David and I arrived in Podgora during the fourth week of our 48-day Croatia road trip this past spring. For the previous three weeks, we had navigated travels to Zagorje, Slavonia, Varaždin, Zagreb, and Pag Island. . . The first few weeks of our trip had many high points but also many low points, which were really no one’s fault but my own. I took on too much and didn’t build in enough time for myself to relax and unwind, especially after coming off of a year with little to no self-care (or self-love for that matter). . I felt the mood of our trip (and in myself) change considerably when we arrived in Podgora. We were invited to Podgora by Jadranka of @galah_apartment and I was excited to visit since I had never heard of the small town before but the pictures I Googled ahead of our trip convinced me that I would surely love it. And guest what? I did. And David did, too. ❤️ . You can walk from one end of Podgora’s seaside promenade to the other in about 30 minutes time (if you’re a fast walker) and so small is a highly appropriate description. . . Despite its size, Podgora is filled with charm--checkered with colorful, compact stone houses and hugged by the mighty Biokovo Mountain from one side and the soothing Adriatic Sea on the other. . More impressions of Podgora: high-quality restaurants (with price tags to match!), super clean, beautiful pebbled beaches, friendly locals, and the views--THE VIEWS, THE VIEWS, THE VIEWS. 😍 . . There was something about Podgora’s beauty that reminded me of Maui, Hawaii. They are two entirely different places, but Podgora’s vibe left me with the same wonder I felt as a kid visiting Maui with my family. . . I was thirsty for it--this wonder--and drank it up to help mend the pain I had been carrying with us. . We visited many places in Croatia during our 48-day road trip, but Podgora definitely tops the list as one of my favorite new discoveries. So thank you, Jadranka for giving us the opportunity to experience it. 💙 . Interested in learning more about our favorite Croatia road trip experiences? Check out my latest blog post (link in bio) for a rapid-fire recap of many memorable moments from our trip. Hope you’ll enjoy it! 😊
It’s been some time since I posted regularly here and on my blog. I’m sad that sometimes I need to let my passion project (aka The Croatia Chronicles 🇭🇷) remain still to attend to other more pressing matters at times, but such is life—filled with races and strolls, ups and downs. . No matter though. I am here. Sometimes less present, sometimes more. But here, and often thinking about Croatia, about memories from our recent 48-day road trip, and about stories that I want to share, and will continue to share with you over the next many weeks, months, and maybe even years if you end up liking me enough—lol. 😊 . Thank you to everyone who joined me (and David) on our recent Croatia road-trip virtually (and who continue to be eager for updates! ❤️). And thank you to all new followers out there, too! 😃 . For old followers and new, here’s a little re-introduction to me & my project (and also David, my husband, pictured here with me on a boat in Rovinj this past June): . My name’s Kristina and I’m a writer & editor (also currently in grad school 📚😩) and The Croatia Chronicles is my passion project. It’s a revamp of a blog I started back in 2012 when I taught English in Rovinj, and it’s also an expansion—intended to deliver honest stories about my experiences in, with, and of Croatia. . . I write with heart and from the heart here and on my blog. These stories go beyond highlighting tourist offers—they aim to dive deep and slow things down so you can savor Croatia as I do—with love, care, delight, and wonder. ❤️ . So why Croatia? I consider it my second home. I was born & raised in 🇺🇸 (Michigan! 💙) but spent many summers growing up in 🇭🇷 around family & friends there. My family is from the best region (🤣) Zagorje 💚 but I love all of Croatia. (And many other places too!) . My husband’s name is David and he is my main travel companion (although I often travel with friends as well). He’s also made in 🇺🇸 but has a spicy mix of 🇹🇼 and 🇨🇴 in him. . . That’s all for now. You’ll have the chance to discover more as I share stories. Thanks, as always, for reading! ❤️
I had never been to Podgora, and quite frankly had never even heard of Podgora until meeting Jadranka of @galah_apartment through Instagram. . . As David and I planned our 48-day road trip across Croatia, Jadranka extended a kind offer of a 3-night complimentary stay at @galah_apartment and we happily accepted. (Please know that all opinions expressed are my own.) . I am SO glad we said “yes” to Jadranka’s offer because we FELL IN LOVE with Podgora. ❤️ . Podgora is our kind of town. It’s small, charming, clean, and chill. Plus, it’s surrounded by natural beauty with the sparkling, blue Adriatic in front and the protective, scenic guard of Biokovo Mountain in the back. 💙. . As you flip through the photos here, you’ll see the marina view from @galah_apartment and the bedroom view of Biokovo Mountain. It was a dream to wake up in the apartment for the 3 days we spent there. I couldn’t get enough of the views. 😍 If we were able to, we’d definitely have stayed longer. . In addition to the views from @galah_apartment, I enjoyed the apartment’s central location--right on Podgora’s seaside promenade. Stepping outside, you have plenty of restaurants and cafes out front, or you can opt to walk the length of the promenade and check out other establishments. . . Podgora’s clean, pebbly beaches are also highly accessible from the apartment--just a 1 minute walk to the closest one! 😍 . Within the modern apartment, you can enjoy the inviting comfort of two balconies, a living room (which can function as a second bedroom with a pull-out couch), a kitchen, a bathroom, and a master bedroom. @galah_apartment is so well-stocked with essentials (even complimentary coffee and tea!) that I didn’t even need to open up our traveling supply bag. . While we didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Jadranka during our stay, we did meet her sister and fellow apartment manager, Irena, who lives right next door with her friendly gentle giant of a dog. Irena was a wonderful host--always up for conversation and willing to help with activity and restaurant recommendations. . So will we return to Podgora? 100% yes. Will we also return to @galah_apartment? Most definitely.
